State Taxes Deptt imposes Rs 1.63 crore penalty on tax evaders

JAMMU, Aug 3: The State Taxes Department has imposed penalty of Rs 1.63 crore on tax evaders in last four months.
The enforcement activities were carried out under the instructions of Commissioner State Tax Rashmi Singh and under the supervision of Additional Commissioner State Taxes (Administration & Enforcement) Namrita Dogra as well as DC Enforcement Samba and Udhampur (Additional charge) Sanjay Gupta.
As per Deputy Commissioner State Taxes Samba, the Department has imposed Rs 98.70 lakh penalty in Samba, Rajouri and Poonch, and 65.57 lakhs penalty in Udhampur region on vehicles within four months (April 2023 to July 2023) for not possessing proper documents required for transportation of goods.
The checking was carried out by the State Tax Officers of Enforcement wing in Samba, Udhampur, Rajouri and Poonch districts. Furthermore, 1,75,395 E-way bills were verified by different teams of STOs. The E-way bill verification controls the tax evasion.
Apart from imposing penalties, Commissioner State Taxes J&K has consistently been formulating and spearheading many good practices like creation of Suvidha Kendras, organizing tax awareness campaigns, seminars, public outreach programs etc. to help and guide the stakeholders and taxpayers, build synergy and productive capacity.
In order to facilitate extension of E-Way bills of stranded vehicles due to uncertain climatic conditions, the Taxes Department has issued certain SOPs/guidelines to tax payers/ transporters/ business establishments for any assistance. In this regard, they can contact helpline numbers of Suvidha Kendra established at Ramban, Udhampur, Samba, Rajouri, Poonch, Doda, Kishtwar or Ramban along NH44 and Mughal Road or contact the Jurisdictional State Taxes Officer.
It is pertinent to mention here that J&K has registered a substantial growth in collection of goods and services tax in the current fiscal year which is 23.89% more than the national average which clearly reflects that the revenue of circles is directly proportional to enforcement activities.
