State Taxes Deptt imposes Rs 19.5 lakh penalty on tax evaders

JAMMU, May 8: State Taxes Department has imposed Rs 19.5 lakh penalty on vehicles within a week for not possessing proper documents required for transportation of goods.
The checking was carried out by the State Tax Officers of Enforcement wing in Samba, Rajouri and Poonch districts under the instructions of Commissioner State Tax, Rashmi Singh, and under the supervision of Additional Commissioner, State Taxes (Adm & Enforcement), Namrita Dogra and under close supervision of DC enforcement Samba, Sanjay Gupta and Assistant Commissioner Samba, Aijaz Qaiser.
As per the department, Deputy Commissioner Enforcement wing Samba constituted different teams headed by State Tax Officers for enforcement activities in Samba, Rajouri and Poonch districts
During enforcement drive, one vehicle carrying scrap was intercepted at Samba, without tax invoices and penalty amounting to Rs 8.04 lacs was imposed and recovered. Apart from this, penalty has been imposed on vehicles carrying tobacco products, electronics items, TMT bars, readymade garments etc without tax invoice and e way bills.
As per the Deputy Commissioner Enforcement Samba, the Department would further emphasize on the checking against the conveyances carrying goods without proper tax invoices, e-way bills etc and penalize the vehicles as per GST Act 2017, for evading tax so as to ensure that tax evasion can be curbed.
It is pertinent to mention here that the total revenue realised during previous F Y 2022-23 from Circle Poonch, Rajouri, Samba 1&2 is Rs 242.79 crores and penalty realised is Rs 1.55 crores which is 68 percent higher than the previous F.Y. 2021-22 which clearly reflects that the revenue of Circles is directly proportional to Enforcement activities.
The department has imposed Rs 20.25 lakhs penalty on the tax evaders in the month of April, 2023 in these three districts.
The inspection teams were headed by five STO’s, Ashiq Rafiq Malik, Mohd Naseem, Sheetal Choudhary, Pervaiz Wani and Yudhvir Padha Inspectors, Sub inspectors and other officials of the State tax department.
Apart from imposing penalties on tax evaders, Commissioner State Taxes Department, J&K, had recently published the first edition of its newsletter ‘KARTAVYA’ to highlight the initiatives and milestones achieved by the department. Further, GST Suvidha Centres have been established in every district for the ease of tax payers and also awareness programs were held to create awareness among transporters, traders and public.
