States must focus on sustaining competitiveness: CII

JAMMU, Mar 18: Ajay Shankar, Chairman, Expert Committee Constituted by DIPP & Former Secretary, DIPP, Government of India, today stressed the need to create consensus on mainstream skilling as a part of normal education.
He was speaking at the panel discussion on North – Sustaining the Competitive Edge during the CII conference on ‘Building North for a Better Tomorrow’, organized by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) as part of CII Northern Region’s Annual Regional Meeting, here today.
Mr Shankar said that provisions should be made for affordable rental workers’ housing as a part of infrastructure development. He said it was necessary to work for growth of the food processing sector and agro-based industries for regional growth. “We should be more ambitious and aggressive, and then only our dream of a better North can be achieved,” Mr Shankar remarked.
Shreekant Somany, Chairman, CII Northern Region & Chairman & Managing Director, Somany Ceramics Ltd, gave an overview of how the Northern Region occupies a prominent position in the national economic landscape.
Jayant Krishna, CEO NSDC, stressed the need to continuously upgrade curriculum and infrastructure of Technical/Vocational Education system. “Skilling should become an integral part of MGNREGA,” he suggested.
Vinayak Chatterjee, Chairman, CII Taskforce on Railways & Chairman, Feedback Infra Pvt Ltd said, “Since the industry suffers in a land-locked Northern Region, speedy implementation of Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor and Dedicated Freight Corridors is the need of the hour.
Sumant Sinha, Chairman & CEO, ReNew Power Ventures Pvt Ltd, said that the Northern states should give efforts to utilise the untapped renewable energy potential.  Sheikh Imran, Chairman CII Jammu & Kashmir State Council, said that the people of J&K are highly skilled in the art of weaving and handicraft design, which provides opportunities for setting up new textile and handicraft units in the State.
Eminent speakers from the industry and the Government, including Al Gore, former Vice President of USA, Sumit Mazumder, president, CII and others also shared their perspective at the conference.
