STCC acts against illegal sale of cigarettes

Srinagar, Mar 10: State Tobacco Control Cell (STCC) , Directorate of Health Services in collaboration with Department of Food Safety and Police today launched a city wide crackdown on illegal sale of cigarettes and other Tobacco Products.
The inspections were held in wake of growing concerns about increasing prevalence of substance abuse and to verify the adherence to Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act 2003.
The Act prohibits advertisement of and provides for regulation of trade and commerce in production and distribution of cigarettes and other tobacco products.
Large number of vendors and stores situated at different places were found selling cigarettes without the mandatory pictorial warnings. Some 21 shopkeepers were challaned for seeking loose cigarettes.
The enforcement squad/ team has been directed to go for regular monitoring and enforcement of tobacco control laws in District Budgam also.
