Stem cell donor drive by TBS in JU

Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, Sept 26: The Business School, University of Jammu, in collaboration with DATRI, organized a systematic donor drive under its Social Immersion Programme, here today.
This donor drive is first of its kind not only in The Business School but also in the entire State of Jammu & Kashmir. DATRI is a Chennai based non-profit organization that was founded with a mission to save lives of those suffering from life threatening diseases such as Cancer, Thalassemia, Anaemia and other blood related disorders etc.
On the occasion, Prof Alka Sharma, Director, The Business School. talked about menace that cancer and diseases like thalassemia have created in our society.  She also emphasized on the need for conducting such programmes so that The Business School can contribute towards this noble cause.
Ms Shweta, Coordinator of DATRI, enlightened the students with the procedure of taking a buccal swab for HLA typing. An audio visual presentation was made to elaborate the complete procedure of stem cell donation. She also shared the life experiences of donors and patients through short videos.
After the interaction session, process for registration started. Faculty members of The Business School registered themselves as volunteers for future stem cell donations. Over 200 students from The Business School, ICccr&HRM, and SHTM participated in the donor drive and registered themselves as volunteers.
Dr Rachna, Senior Assistant Professor of The Business School, was the coordinator for the programme.
A blood stem cell transplant can save the lives of such patients. DATRI seeks to build awareness and enroll potential blood stem cell donors. The probability of finding a match is only one in 10,000 to one in two million. With such low probability, it is necessary to have a very large registry of willing donors. For a large country like ours, to have a large registry of potential donors, there is an immediate need for awareness on the entire process from recruitment of donors to becoming a match. Countries like Germany and USA have millions of donors in their registry as compared to less than two lakh donors in all-Indian registries. So it is a big step towards awareness and change.
