Major tragedy averted by police

JAMMU, Apr 28: A major tragedy has been averted with timely detection of a sticky and timer-fitted Improvised Explosive Device (IED) by Jammu Police at Sidhra Bypass on outskirts of the City this morning.
Recovery of the IED came just six days after fidayeen attack at Sunjuwan in which a CISF ASI was martyred and 10 security personnel were injured while both the militants were eliminated in five-hour long gun battle.
SSP Jammu Chandan Kohli told the Excelsior that police teams detected suspicious object inside a bag at Sidhra Bypass about 100 metres from Orange Hotel on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
Police immediately sounded an alert and stopped vehicle movement on the highway.
A Bomb Disposal Squad was called to the spot which defused the IED concealed in the bag, thus, averting major tragedy.
Sources said it was a sticky IED fitted with magnet and timer and had to be planted by the militants to cause major catastrophe. However, with timely detection of the explosive device, a major tragedy has been averted.
It couldn’t be ascertained immediately as to who kept the bag having IED on the National Highway.
“The bag was dropped by the Over Ground Workers (OGWs) and the IED had to be planted either on the National Highway or somewhere else to cause casualties of security personnel and civilians. However, the militants failed in their plot,” sources said.
Senior police officials visited the site for investigations.
CCTV footage from nearby areas is being taken to reach to the accused, sources said.
Traffic was restored on the Highway after about an hour after IED was defused.
Sticky bomb can also be fitted under the vehicle as it carries magnet and explodes at the time fixed in the device.
A number of sticky bombs were recovered along the International Border in Samba sector last year.
Meanwhile, police continued investigations in Sunjuwan terror attack of April 22 and mysterious blast at village Laliana in Bishnah tehsil on April 24, just hours before the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Jammu.
Police have already arrested three Kashmiri men who were involved in bringing the militants from International Border of Supwal in Samba sector to Sunjuwan and another for providing mobile phones to them.
During investigations, police don’t rule out possibility of making some more arrests in South Kashmir as well as Jammu region.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has already handed over Sunjuwan terror attack case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Investigations were also underway in mysterious explosion at village Laliana in Bishnah tehsil in wee hours of April 24 and material from the spot has already been sent for detailed analysis outside to study nature of the blast.
Police have not ruled out that the blast was handiwork of Pakistan.
