Sir,
The tragic incident of the gang rape and brutalization of a 23 year old girl in the national capital is shameful and should be condemned by one and all. The incident has triggered widespread protests across the nation and exposed the inefficiency of the Delhi Police. What makes the incident all the more outrageous that after committing the heinous act, the rapists threw her out of the bus and leaving her severely injured and she is battling for life and her condition is deteriorating. The incident shows how our girls and women are vulnerable to criminals. The fact that a woman in India is raped every 22 minutes and a child is raped every 76 minutes has definitely lowered the image of our country and made the foreigners view it as ‘Land of rapes’.
The incident calls for strict laws and their implementation to protect our women folk from criminals. Fast track courts need to be set up to award exemplary punishment to the rapists to prevent recurrence of crime against women which has assumed alarming proportion in recent times. Law Enforcement agencies too need to review their functioning and ensure active involvement of the community for better policing. More and more women police personnel be recruited to prevent such tragic incidents. Last but not least, urgent steps should be taken to create awareness among the people about the need to change their mind set and learnt to respect women so that our sisters and mothers can move freely without any fear.
Yours etc……
