JAMMU, Oct 11: Central Committee of Jammu Province Bank Employees Federation (JPBEF) today demanded strengthening of Public Sector Banks, infuse more capital and provide adequate manpower in the banks.
The meeting was presided by president of the Federation, Tara Singh and attended by leaders of all the Nationalized Banks. The agenda of the meeting was to confirm the minutes of previous meeting of the Federation, recent developments of Central Committee of AIBEA held on Sep 10-11, 2023, organizational matters and recent developments taking place in Banking Industry.
General secretary Arun Kumar Gupta, informed about recent developments taking place in Banking Industry. He demanded strengthening of Public Sector Banks, by adequate infusion of capital, human resources and strengthened statutory framework to recover the stressed assets.
He said that Banking is a very important public utility service, serving large number of customers and general banking public. After nationalization of Banks in 1969, bank
branches have been opened in all parts of the country including in remote rural villages.
Commensurate with this branch expansion, employees were being recruited by the Banks. But in the recent years, while the number of customers of the Banks has increased manifold, the total volume of business has gone up, the consequent workload on the employees has increased unbearably, but there is no adequate recruitment in the Banks.
He said the vacancies arising out of retirements, promotions, deaths etc. are not being filled up. Additional staff is not being provided in branches to cope up with the increase in business. More and more schemes of the Government are being implemented through the bank accounts. In the name of Financial Inclusion, more than 50 crores of Jan Dhan Yojana accounts have been opened by Public Sector Banks. All these also add to the workload on the employees in the Branches. This acute shortage of staff in the Branches is adversely affecting the satisfactory customer services.
There seems to be deliberate attempt on the part of the Government and Bank managements to reduce the number of employees in clerical and subordinate cadre in the Banks and to increase the number of supervisory staff. They now prefer to outsource the regular and permanent jobs in the Banks on contractual basis. Because of this, the recruitment of clerical staff in the Banks has come down drastically and there is a virtual ban on appointment of subordinate staff.
All India Bank Employees Association has given call for agitation which include the strike starting from December 4, he added
