Strike in Kashmir

Srinagar, Feb 9: Kashmir valley today observed shutdown on the hanging anniversary of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
Guru was hanged in Tihar jail on Feb 9, 2013 for his involvement in Parliament attack on 2001.
The shutdown was observed in response to the strike call given by Hurriyat Conference leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik.
To thwart any protests and march on the occasion, authorities had imposed curfew like restrictions in old city. Security forces in large numbers were deployed in and around the old city and entry and exit points of the city were barricaded.
Concertina wires were laid at various locations in city that hampered public movement. In Sopore, large contingent of security forces were deployed to thwart any protest or march to Guru’s home.
Shops and business establishments, coaching institutes, petrol pumps remained shut while skeletal movement of private transport was observed on the roads.
Geelani and Mirwaiz were put under house detention at his office cum residence at Hyderpora Srinagar.
