Strike over LPG shortage

SRINAGAR, Oct 12: Normal life was disrupted in Kashmir valley today due to a strike called by an amalgam of trading bodies seeking an increase in the number of subsidised LPG cylinders.
People also protested against the non-availability of LPG at several places in Kashmir and police used force to chase protesters, who had blocked Srinagar-Baramulla national highway at several places.
People protested at several places in Srinagar and Baramulla against the LPG shortage and its price rise. The protesters blocked national highway at several places between Shalteng and Narbal for around 4 hours before police intervened and chased the protesters away.
Protests on LPG were held at several places in downtown including Rajouri Kadal, Bohri Kadal, Safa Kadal, Hazratbal. At few places protesters also pelted stones on passing vehicles.
A police spokesman said here today that people staged protests against the rise in LPG prices and blocked National Highway at Umarabad, Srinagar. However, police chased them away and restored the traffic on the Highway.
The spokesman said that some miscreants pelted stone on passing vehicles and police at Bohri Kadal and Rajouri Kadal in downtown Srinagar. Police exercising maximum restrain, chased them away. No one was hurt in the incident, the spokesman added.
Meanwhile schools, shops and other business establishments were closed due to the strike called by Kashmir Economic Alliance and supported by various organisations including Kashmir High Court Bar Association and Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Association.
The alliance has asked people to take to streets to press the Government to relax the cap on the number of subsidised cylinders per year in Kashmir.
Public transport remained off the roads but small private cars were seen plying the roads. Attendance in Government offices remained thin due to non-availability of public transport.
The lawyers also didn’t attend court affecting their functioning in Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Srinagar, Saddar Court Srinagar and other district and Tehsil level courts.
