SRINAGAR, June 7: Stressing that the real power lies with the people, National Conference President and former Member of Parliament, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, today said that the opposition in Parliament has emerged stronger.
Speaking to media persons at the party headquarters Nawa-e-Subh co-complex, Abdullah said that when he was in Parliament, the opposition was weaker and authoritarianism was rampant.
“This time the opposition is stronger in the house. Back then, when I was there, we were weak and nobody used to listen to us. There was authoritarianism and that has ended now as people have spoken through their vote,” he said.

Abdullah said that people have made it clear that the real power in a democracy lies with them and by coming out to vote, they have ensured that the Constitution is safeguarded.
“People have announced their verdict, and the Constitution has been saved. People have stated that they are powerful, and this has been proven. The real power of making and bringing people down lies with the people; the power of the vote is all that people have,” he said.
On the earlier claims of the BJP securing 370 seats in the Lok Sabha elections, with some even going so far as to chant slogans of “400 paar,” he said that the exit polls created misconceptions.
“The exit polls should be closed and those behind all this should apologize to the people for creating misconceptions,” he said.
Replying to a question regarding the formation of the Government with the support of allies in the center, Abdullah said: “It is being formed, let it be; let there be an NDA Government; we will see and everyone will see.”
