RAMBAN, July 29: An Engineering student was allegedly roughed up by army personnel today for trying to overtake their convoy along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway near Charil area of Tehsil Banihal, triggering protests by local residents.
The protesters blocked the highway in Banihal for over an hour but dispersed peacefully after police assured them that a case was registered against the Army personnel in connection with the alleged manhandling of the student, a police official said.
The official said the trouble started when some Army personnel from Quick Reaction Team (QRT) allegedly beat up the student Junaid Bin Ashraf Mir, a resident of Chari village, who was travelling in his private car and tried to overtake the convoy in Banihal market.
The student also suffered some injuries in the alleged assault by the troops.
The incident sparked protest by locals including women who blocked the highway, the official said, adding senior police and civil officers immediately rushed to the spot and pacified the protesters and restored the traffic on the highway.
It is pertinent to mention here that during the demonstration, the protestors rose anti India slogans, but no police action was initiated against them.
A case under FIR Number 101/19 under section 147, 323 and 341 RPC has been registered at Banihal Police Station against the Army personnel in connection with the incident and investigation started.
