Srinagar, Aug 30: Students in border town of Handwara in Kupwara district of North Kashmir today clashed with police against the killing of their colleague.
Witnesses said the students of Government Degree College (GDC) Handwara boycotted their classes and converged on their institute campus to protest killing of second year student Shahid Bashir Wani by Army in Hafruda forests last week. They alleged that he was killed in fake gunfight and sought impartial probe so that perpetrators are brought to book.
The students, amid sloganeering, came out of their college and pelted stones on police deployed additionally there. The police retaliated with teargas canisters and dispersed the students. Some of the female students fainted due to tear smoke but they were out of danger. The situation in Handwara returned to normal after remaining tense for several hours due to student protest.
Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Handwara, Shabir Khan said they did not use force against the students and were dispersed after “interaction” with them. “Some of them pelted stones on police but we held an interaction with them and later they dispersed peacefully. We didn’t beat anyone nor we barged into the college,” he said.
