Successful spine deformity corrective surgery conducted at Ankur Maitrika Hospital

JAMMU, June 28: Another successful spine deformity corrective surgery under the leadership of neurosurgeon Dr Vipul Kumar Gupta was conducted at Ankur Maitrika Hospital, Jammu.
The surgery was performed on a 20-year-old female who had deformity of spine commonly known as scoliosis with postural deformity to right side and had difficulty and pain while walking since childhood. The parents consulted local doctors but no definitive treatment was provided. At last, the patient came to Ankur Maitrika Hospital and consulted Dr Vipul Kumar Gupta (brain & spine surgeon) who thoroughly analyzed her case.
The patient was planned for surgical procedure after thorough investigations and fitness from cardiology department and anesthesia department by team of specialist at Ankur Maitrika Hospital. The patient was taken up for surgery under general anesthesia under the guidance of Dr Rohit Gupta (Neuro-anesthetist and HoD Anesthesia) and his team with proper neuro-physiological monitoring intra-operatively to prevent neuro defects.
The neurophysiological monitoring is itself performed for the first time in Jammu province at this hospital. Multilevel fixation was done with sewers and rods along with TLIF (AT L5 S LEVEL) and derotation of spine was performed over a period of 4 hours. Post procedure patient was extubated and shifted to ICU for overnight observation. She was shifted to room next day post operatively. The patient was mobilized on 3rd post operative day with connected positive and normalized gait with no neuro defects. The physiotherapy was started under Dr Sahiba Gupta and team. She was discharged on 4th day in stable condition.
Explaining about the challenges of such surgery, Dr Vipul Kumar Gupta said that similar cases can be difficult to handle in view of danger to spinal cord, but with adequate planning preoperative and with availability of neurophysiological monitoring which eases the intra-operative assessment, such surgeries have better outcomes.
Dr Vipul said that now all sorts of brain and spine surgeries can be performed at Ankur Maitrika Hospital with all latest infrastructures. Dr Ajay Wakhloo appealed the people of J&K to come and avail the facility at Ankur Maitrika Hospital.
