Sufism mainstay of Kashmir culture, tradition: Farooq

SRINAGAR, July 4: Jammu and Kashmir National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah today said that Sufism has been the mainstay of Kashmiri cultural and tradition.
While extending greetings to people on the Urs observance of Hazrat Baba Haider Reshi (RA), which is to be observed at his shrine in Anantnag, Farooq Abdullah said, “The Reshis brought the essence of Islamic teaching to every house hold by localizing it. Their teachings touch a spectrum of issues encompassing both individual as well as the society in their fold. They talked of compassion, brotherhood and mutual respect which are the pivotal aspects of any stable society. These great men paraphrased universal values in their poetry.”
He further said that the Reshi Mystic Thought has an innate relation with the people of Kashmir. “The contribution of such Sufis as Nund Reshi and his associates to the spiritualism and humanism in Kashmir is immense. Reshism was a scared mission dedicated to the cause of humanity as a whole and especially to offer succor and solace to the suffering masses of Kashmir. They encouraged people to live a life of piety and discipline and stressed that the real devotion of God was in the service of suffering man. These Reshis encouraged the people to love humanity and god. They exhorted people to overcome pride, anger, greed, lust, and excessive involvement in worldly affairs. These Reshis had attained the highest stages of spiritual refinement, awakening of self. They used their poetic genius and saying judiciously to make the erring man understand the essence of life and spirituality,” he said and prayed for peace and prosperity of the State.
Meanwhile, the NC president and vice president also greeted the first batch of Hajis who left for the annual Hajj pilgrimage. The duo has urged the pilgrims to pray for peace and prosperity of the State. They also prayed for the safe return of all the Hajis.
