AKHNOOR, Apr 1: Minister for Public Health Engineering (PHE), Irrigation and Flood Control, Sukhnandan Kumar today toured Pargwal area of Akhnoor tehsil and took stock of the protection bunds along River Chenab and local irrigation canals feeding different border villages.
The Minister was accompanied by MLA Akhnoor Rajiv Sharma and MLA Chammb, Dr Krishen Lal Bhagat, besides Chief Engineer and Superintending Engineer Irrigation & Flood Control, Executive Engineer PHE and Sub Divisional Magistrate Akhnoor.
The Minister visited Gadkhal Irrigation canal head Kharoon, Kotli Mian Fatieh, Gujjar Basti and took stock of the breaches on the bunds along River Chenab caused due to last year floods.
The Minister inspected all the breach sites at these places and assessed the situation arisen due to recent rains. However, at present there was no immediate threat to any of the habitations in the area.
Considering the threat of spilling over of river water in coming rainy season, the Minister directed I&FC authorities to take steps for early start of work to plug the breaches. He directed them to make it sure that all the breaches are plugged in shortest possible time as further delay can aggravate the situation and pose threat to the safety of life and property of the villagers situated along the river .
At Gadkhal Kharoon, the Minister inspected the progress on the protection and desilting work on the local irrigation Canal. He also visited Muthi Mehra, Shitriyala, Indri Patan, Manchak, Bakore and Datyal villages of Sangrampur area and took stock of the irrigation facilities available for the local farmers.
