Summer-like weather in Kashmir, fresh WD to hit February 16

SRINAGAR : Though the minimum temperature remained sub zero, summer-like weather prevailed in the Kashmir valley where a fresh Western Disturbance (WD) is likely to hit from February 16.
Kargil continued to freeze at minus 17 degree while it was minus 12.4 degree at Leh in Ladakh region.    A Meteorological department spokesman said here this afternoon that weather will be dry in the state during the next 24 hours.
However, a fresh WD is likely to hit the region on February 16 which could result in fairly wide spread to wide spread rain or snow from February 16 to February 18 with heavy precipition at scattered places over the state.    People woke up to yet another sunny morning though icy cold winds continued in the Kashmir valley, where the minimum temperature remained sub zero.    World famous health resort of Pahalgam was coldest with minus 6.9 degree, a notch below normal though it was one degree warmer than yesterday.
Gulmarg, a famed ski resort, where a local ski guide was killed under a snow avalanche yesterday afternoon, recorded minus 5.4 degree minimum temperature, which was 1.6 notches above normal. The Gulmarg slopes recently received several feet of fresh snowfall, attracting large number of skiers, tourists and other adventure lovers.    Srinagar, where people stepped out of their homes after three days general strike and restrictions, witnessed yet another sunny day today, presenting a summer like weather conditions. However, icy cold winds also continued because of recent snowfall on all surrounding hills.    The Met spokesman said the minimum temperature was minus 1.2 degree, slightly below normal in the city.    Qazigund recorded minus 1.2 degree, Kupwara minus 2.8 degree and Kokernag minus 0.2 degree minimum temperature.    There was no respite from the chill at Kargil, a border town in Ladakh region as the minimum temperature remained minus 17 degree while at Leh it was minus 12.4 degree, a notch more than yesterday when it was minus 13.6 degree.
