Suspension of biometric authentication for ration distribution demanded

JAMMU, May 3: Fair Price Shop Dealers’ Association (FPSDA) has urged upon the Commissioner Secretary, Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA) to temporarily suspend biometric based authentication of consumers for ration distribution in view of rising Corona cases and resultant deaths.
In a letter written to the Commissioner Secretary, Milky Ram, president FPSDA Jammu province said that since biometric system was introduced by the Department, they have been distribution ration to the consumers in a fair, free and transparent manner through biometric machines but the 2nd wave of Corona pandemic has terrorized everybody from consumers as well as dealers and all are hesitant in using biometric machines.
“As per the leading epidemiologists, Coronavirus can stay active on surface for hours to few days and in biometric system, every consumer requires to put finger on surface of biometric machine due to which the chances of spread of infection rises manifold,” he said, adding there is also ‘psychological unease’ and fear among the general public due to per day increase in number of COVID cases and resultant deaths.
He said due to use of biometric system, there is apprehension that they might got infected as during routine distribution of ration, all consumers have to touch biometric machine. The FPSDA president appealed the Commissioner Secretary to temporarily suspend biometric based authentication of consumers for distribution of ration.
