Sir,
Apropos article ‘Stray dog menace control by JMC’ DE Oct 4, 2023, I commend efforts of the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) in addressing the pressing issue of stray dog menace in our city. The theme for World Animal Day 2023, “Raising the Status of Animals to Improve Welfare Standards Around the Globe,” resonates with the JMC’s commitment to the welfare of our street dogs.
Stray dogs are an integral part of our community and deserve humane treatment. JMC’s adoption of the Animal Birth Control and Anti Rabies Vaccination program, suggested by the WHO, is a vital step towards managing the street dog population responsibly. Spaying, neutering, and releasing them back to their territories with identification marks is a scientific and compassionate approach.
It’s imperative to understand that the growing stray dog population has multiple causes, including the absence of effective birth control and vaccination programs, as well as pet owners abandoning their animals. These strays pose various challenges, such as traffic accidents, waste, noise pollution, and conflicts with humans. Furthermore, the risk of rabies transmission is a serious concern.
JMC’s partnership with M/s FRIENDICOES-SECA to implement the ABC/ARV program across all wards is praiseworthy. The significant reduction in dog bite cases demonstrates the program’s effectiveness.
However, addressing this issue comprehensively requires a collective effort. Collaboration between the public, animal welfare organizations, resident welfare associations, volunteers, and government bodies is crucial. Alongside, strict regulations against improper waste disposal and casual feeding of dogs, as well as promoting formal ownership, are necessary to eliminate canine homelessness.
In conclusion, while JMC’s efforts are laudable, we must all unite to tackle the root causes of the stray dog problem and ensure a safer and more compassionate environment for both humans and animals.
