TAIPEI, July 19: Taiwan stocks rose 1.41 percent in their best one-day percentage gain in nearly three weeks on Thursday, joining regional bourses in gains after positive U.S. Company earnings and paced by chip makers and TSMC ahead of its quarterly results.
TSMC advanced 3.6 percent. Its client, Qualcomm Inc , predicted a stronger December after cutting revenue and earnings forecasts for the current quarter on weaker-than-expected demand for semiconductors.
The main TAIEX index closed up 99.52 points at 7,148.57, its biggest one-day percentage gain since late June.
Chip shares added 2.75 percent and the broader electronics sub-index rose 1.85 percent. Banking shares jumped 1.1 percent.
The Taiwan dollar firmed by T$0.028 to trade at T$29.974.
Foreign investors were net sellers on Wednesday, bringing their total selling to T$43.4 billion this month. (agencies)
