JAMMU, Mar 28: Minister for Medical Education, Youth Services & Sports, Taj Mohi-ud-Din today welcomed the demand of some members in Upper House to constitute a House Committee to look into the working and performance of PHE Department over the years.
In his reaction to the demand, which was made by some members during a discussion on the working of PHE Department in the Legislative Council yesterday, the Minister, who held the portfolio till recent cabinet reshuffle, said he is proud that many historic decisions were taken during his tenure which need to be taken in to the public domain. He said he has nothing to hide and supported the demand to set up a House Committee which would evaluate the performance and achievements of the Department on comparative basis since 1992, as demanded by the members.
Mr. Taj said history was created with the enactment of J&K Water Resources Act-2010 which was eventually copied by six states of the country for implementation in their respective domains. He said the present Minister for PHE is on record as having said on the floor of the Assembly that the water usage charges collected from NHPC and other agencies have crossed Rs. 1000 crore during last year.
The Minister said it was for the first time that NHPC was told by the State Government to adhere to the agreements it has signed with the State Government from time to time. He said it was he who brought the issue of Rawi canal with Punjab from cold storage and took up the matter with the centre. Additionally projects like lake on Tawi and Jhelum beautification etc. were taken up in the State during the tenure, he added.
Mr. Taj said the length and breadth of the State is witness to the expansion of services which took place during his tenure. He said these things need to be discussed in public domain to know the truth and appreciate the good things done.
