SRINAGAR, Jan 3: Residents of Bonzel Machan village in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district are grappling with a severe safety hazard caused by electric wires tangled precariously around wooden poles and trees.
Locals said that the absence of proper electric poles has led to wires being dangerously draped over tree branches, rooftops, and makeshift poles, creating a hazardous environment. “We are particularly worried about our children, as the wires hang at a dangerously low height, which could result in a mishap,” one resident said.
Despite repeated complaints to area linemen, no action has been taken. “The linemen tell the village women to approach the Power Development Department (PDD) office for approval to install poles and wires,” a woman from the village said.
Residents fear an inevitable disaster, noting that the wires are old and could snap at any moment. They also expressed frustration over the delay in connecting a transformer installed in the village two to three years ago. “We have been paying a monthly electricity fee of Rs 1,630, yet we neither receive proper electricity nor have adequate infrastructure,” a local said. He added, “Only the bills reach us on time, but the electricity is still missing.”
When contacted, Executive Engineer Power Development Department, Dilshad Kawoosa, said that they would look into the matter.
