SRINAGAR, Oct 31: Calling for ‘credible dialogue’, State General Secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist) and legislator from Kulgam, Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami today said the continued India-Pakistan border tension has resulted in killings and destruction of property and called on both countries to adhere to 2003 ceasefire agreement.
Addressing a press conference here, Tarigami said the border firing and shelling has resulted in killings, destruction of residential houses and large scale displacement of population, especially those living near the Line of Control and International Border.
The senior CPI (M) leader said the political leadership of both the countries should come out of their “narrow cocoons” and see reason their face.
For this to materialize, the Communist leader said, there is no alternative to an immediate structured and sustainable dialogue with all the stakeholders. “There should be no shying away from those who may have ideas diametrically opposite to the official stand on it. At this point of time, there may not be any out of box solution too; but the sincere and sustained dialogue could open new vistas and it is quite possible that the parties may reach to a mutually acceptable way forward or resolve to work it out in a peaceful atmosphere,” said the Kulgam legislator.
The Communist leader said the continued closure of schools and destruction of infrastructure can only benefit those vested interests who want to disarm Valley youth from shaping their future. “Can’t all of us without indulging in blame game contribute a little towards the overall welfare of our younger generation, whose future is at the brink of disaster?” he said.
The CPI (M) leader appealed the political leadership, including separatists, Bar Association, academicians, educationists, intellectuals and Ulema to help in re-opening of schools so that children are not kept blind to education.
Tarigami also demanded a judicial inquiry into the killings of civilians during the unrest “so that the truth comes whether this situation was avoidable or not and fix the responsibility so that their families get some relief.
