SRINAGAR, Feb 3: President, Jammu and Kashmir State Committee of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami today appealed people to extend support to the two-day nationwide general strike called by 11 trade unions on February 20 and 21 in protest against the alleged anti-people policies of the Central Government.
Addressing a press conference here today, Tarigami said that on February 7 a convention of all trade unions of the State will be held at Jammu to chalk out plan as how to make the two-day strike programme a huge success. He exuded confidence that all Central, State employees, contractual employees, daily wagers, casual labourers, Anganwari workers, helpers, Asha workers, trade union organizations and retailers would observe two day strike.
“CITU believes that Central Government’s anti-people economic policies have resulted in large scale retrenchment of workers and price rise thereby affecting the common people badly. The CITU thus reiterates demands of the trade unions such as no disinvestment of profit making Public Sector Undertakings, social security for those working in the un-organized sector including agricultural workers and employment for the unemployed youth,” said Tarigami.
He said policy of privatization, alleged onslaught on trade union rights, dangerous distortion in employment profile due to continuous decrease in regular employment and huge increase in contractisation in Public Sector Undertakings are the reasons that has prompted the CITU to call for the two days strike across the country.
“CITU demands curbing of price rise, universalization of public distribution system, job protection, enforcement of labour laws, social security for unorganized workers, stoppage of disinvestment in PSUs, minimum wages, pension for all, equal wages and benefits to the contractual workers, collective bargaining, removal of ceiling of bonus, ESI, gratuity, compulsory registration of trade unions and ratification of ILO convention number 87 and 98,” said Tarigami.
Referring to unemployment in the State, he said that as per 2011 Census 5.67 lakh unemployed educated youth are registered with various district employment and counseling centres of the State. He demanded a comprehensive plan to tackle alarming unemployment crisis in Jammu and Kashmir.
