In a momentous endeavour aimed at averting further deterioration of the catchment regions along the River Tawi in the Jammu and Udhampur Forest Divisions, the J&K Forest Department has unveiled an all-encompassing strategy for the revitalization of the river, which is financed under the aegis of the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority. In the current landscape, the pronouncements made hold paramount significance. The ever-diminishing water resources, to the extent that the Jal Shakti Department finds itself compelled to make an artificial channel in Tawi itself to divert water from other ends to meet the water supply demands of Old Jammu City during every scorching summer, underscore a critical issue. It is disconcerting that Jammu and Kashmir boasts an extensive expanse of forested regions relative to many other parts of the country yet finds itself confronted with this dire situation. The degradation of forests, to the point where numerous hills stand bereft of any foliage, can be attributed to a relentless demand for wood and the insatiable avarice of human activity, which have wreaked havoc upon the prevailing ecological equilibrium. The Forest Department’s undertaking represents a prudent step, albeit belated, in the right direction.
A comprehensive assessment of the Tawi River’s deterioration is imperative. In areas where the forest cover has been depleted, swift measures such as the installation of check dams, coupled with extensive afforestation, should be promptly executed to counter soil erosion and sustain groundwater levels. The consulting firm, undoubtedly, will offer expert remedial recommendations. However, this endeavour must not be restricted solely to the realms of consultancy and the formulation of DPRs but should be complemented by tangible on-ground efforts. Furthermore, the unmitigated discharge of untreated sewage effluents from the cities into the Tawi River must be curtailed. Abundant though it may be, polluted water holds no utility. The imperative here is for all relevant departments to collaborate as a cohesive team, working in tandem to devise and implement practical solutions.
