Teacher-taught relationship

Sir,
Apropos of the article in the Daily Excelsior under the heading Of Teacher and Taught (by Dr Vikas Dogra, DE Jan 04, 2015) is thought provoking.
The learned professor has highlighted the plight of education of young college students who are not interested in the classes, have no respect for their teachers and are interested  only in mobiles, ear phones, iPods and other gadgets.
Very true, seriousness to studies is nowhere in site these days. Private coaching is fashion of the day and parents afford to pay to the tutors where their wards seek help  to sail through the exams and entrance test to qualify for admission in professional colleges. Classroom teaching, text book, completing the syllabus etc are things of past and on the verge of extension. In the materialistic world a teacher finds it difficult to thrive on his salary only. And additional rupee through private coaching is not rejected.  A student who pays to the person for the  tutorials does not give him the respect of a teacher. At school level grammar becomes the casualty. Language does not develop. Dr  Dogra has complained of language written in answer sheets. He has also referred to the Guru-shishya relations of ancient Indian society. Then education of child was in domain of religious teacher holding higher  values of life, now, it is responsibility of the State.
A respected principal of GGMSc. College Jammu used to advise newly appointed lecturers in his college to never enter a class without preparation, to know their students by  their names rather than class  roll numbers so that they develop respect for their teacher who is well versed with the subject and owns them.
The system of internal assessment was very effective for the healthy teacher-taught relationship.
As per a definition a teacher is friend, philosopher and guide to his students. One who slaps his students is neither friend nor philosopher or guide.
The recent advancement in electronic gadgetry has attracted the attention of younger generation. Teacher will have to be well informed not only in his/her subject he/she has to teach in the class but also about modern methodology in teaching. A teacher has to be miles ahead of his/her students in vast field of knowledge before they respect him/her.
“A teacher is respected who delves deep in knowledge through research and reaches ultimate Truth “(Guru Nanak).
