JAMMU, Apr 11: Minister for Education, Naeem Akhtar, today called for taking advantage of the Optical Fibre Communication Technology by raising global optical network infrastructure in the State that supports future services and meets mounting telecommunication demands.
The Minister said this at the inauguration of one-day workshop on Advanced Optical Fibre Networks at the Government College of Engineering and Technology (GCET), here today. Minister for Social Welfare, Forest, Ecology and Environment, Bali Bhagat and Minister of State for Information, Education and Culture, Priya Sethi were also present on the occasion.
Commissioner/Secretary, Higher Education Sarita Chauhan, Director Colleges, Tariq Ahmed Kawoosa and resource persons from various reputed technical institutes of the country like IIT Kharagpur were also present.
Education Minister stressed the importance of telecommunication infrastructure in today’s globally super-connected world. He urged the students and the teaching community to share and explore the technological developments which can be used for the overall benefit of mankind. He said the growth of technology should be linked with avenues to create employment opportunities for the young engineers adding that he would like GCET to be developed as a hub of recruitment for engineering, students of the region. He said a system for feedback from the recruiting companies should also be developed so as to help the institute meet demands of the market.
The Minister said that GCET is a growing institution, however, certain infrastructural gaps are required to be filled. He assured the staff and the students that the Government has focussed plans for the institute to grow as one of the best technological institutes in the country.
Earlier in her welcome address, Principal GCET, Dr Sameru Sharma highlighted the aim of organizing the workshop to provide common platform to the academicians, researchers and industry to exchange and update the knowledge on the latest developments in Optical Communication systems and their application in various fields, particularly with regard to the recently launched “Digital India” scheme by Government of India.
The workshop was attended by faculty, research scholars, engineering students and industry delegates.
Earlier, the Ministers inaugurated the newly constructed Administrative Block of the College.
