SRINAGAR, June 18: Tehsildar Bijbehara was around a dozen persons injured in protests in a village in South Kashmir’s Bijbehara town.
Abdul Rashid Shah, Tehsildar Bijbehara, was injured when he tried to pacify the people protesting against curtailment of electricity at village Kannelwan.
Around a dozen people were injured when police allegedly resorted to tear gas shelling and lathicharge to disperse the protesting villagers.
The locals of the area said that people from Kannelwan village assembled in large numbers and protested against shortage of electricity in the area.
The protestors alleged that Power Development Department has dispatched them hefty power bills, but “it is ironic how the department can charge huge bills when there is no electricity in the area.”
Reportedly, the protestors later resorted to stone throwing and clashed with the police that continued for hours. Some of the injured have been identified as Saleeqa Bano, Imram Ahmed Tantray, Shafia Jan, Irsahd Ahmed Shah and Shabir Ahmed Shah.
“The power supply in our area has been totally erratic and the Power Development Department (PDD) did not even follow their own schedule,” said the villagers. They said that for last one month their village is completely reeling under darkness.
The locals accused the police of using force on the peaceful protesters.
