JAMMU, July 3:
Unidentified miscreants cut through the iron grille of Mata Tripursundri temple in South Kashmir’s Devsar area of Kulgam district before decamping with cash vault and other valuables in the wee hours today.
In a complaint to the police, Shadi Lal Dhar, a resident of Devsar said, “We went to the temple in the morning to pay obeisance and found iron frame and grills around sanctum sanatorium damaged. The locker and other valuables were also missing.”
They used gas cutters and steel blades to cut the iron grill and desecrate the temple, Dhar said, alleging some articles were also damaged.
Forensic experts and a police team has been sent to the spot to investigate the matter and efforts are on to nab the accused, the SP said.
Demanding protection for the shrine, All Party Migrant Coordination Committee (APMCC) and Mata Tripursundri Prabhandak Committee (MTPC) has condemned the incident.
“The police of Kulgam district has failed to protect the shrine. We demand protection for the shrine,” MTPC president Tej Dhar said.
Chairman of APMCC Vinod Pandit also demanded adequate security at the shrine in the wake of several incidents of desecration of temples in Jammu and Kashmir. (PTI)
