Thanamandi accident: Locals protest against non-availability of doctors

Cong seeks action against those responsible for mishap

RAJOURI, Aug 26: A day after accident at Maggi Morh, in which seven pilgrims died and 27 others were injured, locals of Thanamandi held a strong protest against non-availability of doctors as well as medicines at Sub-District Hospital Thanamandi.
Shouting slogans against the authorities, the protesting people alleged that accident victims could not be provided medical aid because of non-availability of doctors and medicines at the hospital. They blocked Thanamandi -Shahadra Shrief Chowk for more than two hours and disrupted the vehicular movement.
All shops and business establishments in Thanamandi also remained close during the protest dharna, which was lifted only after SDM Thanamandi and SDPO personally reached the spot and pacified the protesters.
Meanwhile, Pradesh Congress has demanded stern action against the officers and officials who failed to perform their duty in preventing overloading of the vehicle, which met with the accident. The Congress leaders also sought to know how a handicapped driver with overloaded vehicle managed to cross several nakas and Police check posts.
In a statement, PCC chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma, former minister Shabir Ahmed Khan, Jahangir Hussain Mir, Ashok Sharma, Ch Mohd Akram, Ch Zaffarullah and Ch Abdul Ghani have demanded thorough enquiry into the matter and action against the guilty.
PCC president G A Mir has expressed shock over the deaths in the accident and appealed the Governor’s administration to take all necessary steps for the best possible treatment to the injured. He also demanded ex-gratia relief to the families of the deceased.
