JAMMU, Dec 11: Emphasizing on this year’s theme of ‘Stand up for Human Rights’ on International Human Rights Day, The Law School, University of Jammu under the leadership of Prof Arvind Jasrotia organized a visit to Balgran–Children Home at Channi Rama and held an interactive session with the inmates of the home.
The faculty of The Law School, University of Jammu namely Dr Monica Narang Assistant Prof, Shubha Vats, Mrinalini Atrey along with students Rohit Khajuria, Nitan Sharma, Kartika Bakshi, Avantika Bakshi, Priya Sharma, Siddharth Jasrotia and Vikas visited the home.
Interaction and enquiry centered around their living conditions, level of nutrition, health measures, complaint redressal mechanisms, status of education, co-curricular activities, constitution of important committees and adherence to JJ rules etc.
While speaking, Dr Monica Narang, Assistant Professor, The Law School said that in order to mitigate their vulnerability, UN has taken a lead in this direction by the formulation of UDHR in general and Child Rights Convention, 1989 in particular. All the commitments enshrined in UN documents are enshrined in various child welfare legislations, important being the Juvenile Justice Act.
The team selected the said home in order to sensitize the students and the common populace towards the varying problems faced by children in institutional care as they are the most vulnerable section among other disadvantaged groups and measures to create awareness among them for their rights should be taken up by all authorities.
