US-born Rockstar girl and model Nargis Fakhri loves jewellery and Bollywood dance. Sreya Basu chats up with the actor at the launch of The Gaja Store in Mumbai
You have taken up quite a few modeling assignments. What about films?
Yes, I am doing a lot of events, brands and magazines. I have been reading a lot of scripts and I have taken my time. And now I feel I have found what I love doing (and that is, acting) …so everything is coming along. I believe in patience. Whatever comes my way, if I want to do it, I will do it. If I don’t want to do it, I clearly say ‘No’.
How is your Hindi tuition going?
Everything takes time…nothing happens overnight. I was plucked out of the sky and put here (Bollywood). So it’s taking time. But it’s going well and I am really happy. I am reading and writing (Hindi), which is great. And when I can read what I am writing in Hindi I feel ecstatic.
We heard you are learning Kathak. You have already learnt a lot of international dance forms in your modeling days. So how are you finding it as a dance form?
Surprisingly there is a transformation. It’s very nice and interesting and beautiful. I watched a lot of videos online…full-on performances. It looks very easy, but it’s quite difficult.
Having tried so many dance forms, which one you like the most?
I love Bollywood dance…those hip-shaking moves.
You are here at the launch of Gaja Store. How important is jewellery to you?
All women love jewellery and I am not an exception. Jewellery is something we use to accentuate our beauty and it is important to complete an outfit, whether it’s an Indian or western wear.
What is that one piece of jewellery that you must have?
Someday you want to wear earrings, someday you like to wear a neck piece or bangle or ring. So I don’t think there is one particular piece that I must have. I must have all the pieces.
What brought you to launch Gaja jewellery store?
I love Gaja jewellery because they are all hand-crafted, which I personally think, is amazing. Each piece is special because it is made by a person not a machine.
Do you buy jewellery for friends and family on special occasions?
It doesn’t have to be a birthday or a special holiday. You should just buy presents for everyone every day. And jewellery is a great present for both guys and girls.
If you are to gift a piece of jewellery to a Bollywood actor, what would it be?
I don’t know when any of them so well that I can decide what to gift them that they will like. The only person I know well is Ranbir (Kapoor) and I will gift him calflets.
Who is your best friend?
My best friend is a white gold and diamond pendant.
What about Katrina (Kaif)?
She is a girl friend and I am not dating her. (Laughs) I like boys.
Is there a special brand that you would love to endorse?
I would like to work with brands that I actually like, those I believe in. So, let’s see how that goes.
What do you have to say about the changing face of Bollywood with films like The Dirty Picture and Kahaani?
I find it pretty cool that Hindi films are changing and women are getting these interesting, powerful roles. And of course, I would like to be a part of something on this line if I feel connected to it. (TWF)
