Swami Ram Swarup Ji, Yogacharya
Study of vedic literature like Mahabharat, Valmiki Ramayan, Shatpath Brahmin Granth, Six Shastras, Upnishads etc. written by ancient Rishis reveals that right from the beginning of the earth uptil Mahabharat war, the knowledge of four vedas was being considered as the world’s culture. Therefore, the kings as well as their public used to follow the vedic preach in their daily lives and as a result, they spent long, happy life and even several aspirants of Vedas attained salvation.
Time laboured on and after Mahabharat war, the sun of Vedas set down. Then the people started making their own ways of worship. Yet, we the Hindus did not stop doing eternal Vedic worship by performing daily Yajyen/agnihotra, yogabhyas etc. because our faith over eternal and everlasting Vedas’ knowledge, which emanates directly from God, did not waiver. However, due to one or the other reason, rest of the people of the world gave up vedic culture and started saying that the same relates only to Aryans.
So, to perform daily Yajyen-Agnihotra, as quoted above, reminds us to follow eternal and traditional Vedic worship, which fulfills all our pious desires, to live long, happy life, as was in previous yugas.
Would it not be difficult for us to decide about unchangeable true worship by observing the contents of Yajurved mantra 31/16 which preaches- “Devaha Yajyen Yajyam Ayajant” i.e. learned of Vedas always worship God by performing Yajyen with ved mantras.
Rigved mantra 10/105/8 also preaches that Yajyen is performed by chanting ved mantras and offering aahutis in burning fire.
Yajyen is presided over by learned of Vedas, who is called Brahma and during Yajyen, he preaches ved mantras to be adopted in daily life and the said benefit is not achieved anywhere else except in Yajyen. Secondly, the Yajyen is never performed by man-made shlokas.
Vedas are self-proof according to Atharvaved mantra 6/61/2 and Sankhya Shastra sutra 5/51.
In the ancient times, learned used to mention ved mantras as an evidence on their views to establish the eternal truth. But to our bad luck, the eternal tradition of producing the evidence of ved mantras, has now been discontinued and the people have started saying unauthentic views at their own accord which is against the vedas.
People also started saying that Aryans have been worshipping Agni (fire) but Aryans never did so, because in Vedas, the meaning of Agni is God also. In Vedic Sanskrit, from ‘ag agrinni” dhatu the word “Agni” is formed, which means first and foremost and the first and foremost is Almighty God only. Therefore before starting any pious deed, the name of God is first chanted. In the morning too, the name of God is to be chanted/remembered before starting any worldly pious deed.
In this connection, Rigved mantra 1/1/1 states – “Agnim Eedey Purohitam…..”.
Here, Agni means God because all its adjectives in the mantra relate to God only-
Purohitam- Protector of universe.
Yajyasya Devam- Preaches us to perform Yajyen.
Ritvijam- worshipable in all seasons.
Hotaaram- Donor of every matter of the world including food, wealth etc.
Ratnadhatamam- lord of precious treasure and metals.
You see, the said adjectives cannot pertain to corporal worldly fire but pertain to Almighty God. Therefore, here the meaning of Agni is Almighty God and the mantra preaches us to desire, worship and realise the said God.
So, the Aryans did not worship fire but knew Vedas and used to worship and still worship Almighty God by performing Yajyen, so why don’t we all Indians, who are living on the land of Rishi-Munis should perform daily agnihotra/yajyen with ved mantras under guidance of learned Acharya, ask Vedas.
Now, I would like to state that divine benefits of performing Yajyen are innumerable but some of them are mentioned here-
Yajyo vai Brahma i.e. Yajyen is God Himself.
Yajyaha yajyam Gachch i.e. all our pious desires and prayers etc. reach to God through Yajyen.
Yajyaha Vishwasya Naabhihi i.e. As a person has his naval similarly the Yajyen is the naval of whole of the universe and when naval of a person is disturbed, several problems arise. In the same way, when people donot perform Yajyen then several problems arise in the world, which have arisen.
Vasoho pavitram asi, dyu asi matarishwano gharmo asi i.e. Yajyen purifies the universe including air.
God states in Yajurved-
Ma Hva Te Yajpateer Hvaarsheet i.e. Oh! Yajmaan and learned of Vedas, you both should not give up doing Yajyen. So, it is the order of God Himself for everyone to perform Yajyen.
Vide Yajurveda mantra 18/29, Aayuhu, Chakshuhu, Shrotram, Vaag, Brahma, Jyotihi, Svaha etc. Yajyein Kalpantaam i.e. become strong in all respects.
The people get pleasure and become learned by listening to Vedas from Brahma and company of Brahma enables the people to realise the divine pleasure etc.
Vedas as well as Bhagwad Geeta shloka 3/15 state that Yajyen is a reason to cause rain and rainfall further provides us with several benefits including the best food crops.
Yajyen destroys illusion and gives us ill-free, long life.
