The real face of Kashmir unrest

Mansi Sharma
This state of unrest in Jammu and Kashmir has raged a wave of violence across the country. People are being killed every day with the number crossing 40 and over 4000 have been injured in the protests over the last few weeks. Buses and police stations are being set to fire and looted. What all this for? Just because a hard core terrorist was slain to death. People are shouting slogans in favour of pseudo ideals of their so called leaders. They are taking out processions mourning the death of their leader- a hard core terrorist – who never gave it a second thought before killing innocent lives to instil fear in their minds.
What has happened to the society today? Where have our social values gone? Are we so misled that we regard terrorists as our leaders? Those people who should be straightaway condemned and should be tried under the law, we are patronising them as our heroes. We have shut down our brains and are following commands of the voices who do not have the courage to carry out their words into actions, all they can do is just provoke, provoke others to do mindless deeds. These provokers are cowards who have no power, who cannot do anything unless and until we mindlessly support them without acknowledging their real motives.
Moreover, the political leaders of the State have left no chance of using the situation to their benefit. They have issued statements criticizing the security forces and condemning the attacks. Nobody wants to take the blame. At this point of time all that the leaders are worried about or pretend to be worried about, is, the innocent people of Kashmir, asking compensation and all kinds of Government aids for these so called innocent people, who are so innocent that they innocently throw stones at the security personnel, they innocently burn down police stations, throw police vehicles in Dal Lake and very innocently and ruthlessly kill a cop. They are so innocent that they do not even know that they are mere puppets in the hands of the ones using them, who put on the mask of innocence in public.
Not only our national and regional leaders but also international leaders few of whom are from our neighbouring countries are leaving no stone unturned to take full advantage of the vulnerability of the prevailing situation and encouraging people to follow the path of violence in lieu of which they will be hailed as leaders and patrons of courage, I suggest, why doesn’t this person try something of this sort in his own country, well, you must always follow what to you preach to set an example before others.
Kashmir issue has been an untreatable sore for the Indians since the very beginning. Wars have been fought, pacts have been signed, meetings have been conducted, proposals have been presented yet none of it proved fruitful because while giving all kinds of possible solutions we never tried to get to the heart of the problem, why did this problem even start? Did any of those people who call themselves true Kashmiris or the beneficiaries of the people of Kashmir, try to find out? What has set one Kashmiri against another? What compelled the peace loving and god fearing Kashmiris to resort to violence? Why are people standing against their own country? Can anyone answer these questions?
Kashmir is a political issue we all know, so, why can’t we find a political solution for this issue. Giving compensations and distributing funds is not the only solution. We have to deal with the ground realities and prepare a course of action likewise. Vague advices and impractical suggestions given as an outsider are not going to help. We will have to become one with the people to yield a static solution.
As for the people, I would like to ask them, where has all the Kashmiriyat gone or was I mistaken to take Kashmiris as peace loving, hospitable people whose intelligence and strategic approach to situations is admirable and whose communal unity is an example for others to follow. Well, I do not see any of these in today’s Kashmir or may be the definition of Kashmiriyat has changed.
The society has degraded at an exasperated rate. We no more follow what we preach and are adamant on the path of demonization.
It is high time we wake up and realize the difference between right and wrong and most importantly between the harsh truth and alluring lies. Without this we as a society will act like puppets in the hands of those who deserve punishment.
