RAJOURI, June 2: Unknown thieves broke into five shops in various areas under the Rajouri Police Station on Saturday and Sunday midnight, and decamped with food items, cash, and other valuable worth lakhs.
A police official said that one of the thefts occurred by breaking the shutters of one Ashwani Sharma’s grocery shop in the Dalogra area of Rajouri, located on the Rajouri-Jammu Highway.
Ashwani said his shop is near his house, and around 5 am on Sunday, he noticed the shutter was broken during his morning walk. He immediately alerted the police.
Upon arrival, the police were stunned to find a significant amount of merchandise missing, including 20 cans of 2 kg and 1 kg Desi Ghee, 15 gallons of 2 litre and 5 litre P-brand mustard oil, 10 bags of 10 kg wheat flour, various dry fruits, and marriage garlands worth thousands of rupees.
The police registered a case, collected fingerprints, and other evidence from the shop, and launched an investigation.
In addition to Sharma’s shop, a chemist shop in Muradpur and three other shops in Palma were also targeted, with substantial amounts of goods stolen.
The victims expressed their frustration, noting that despite police patrols at night, theft incidents continue unabated.
They warned that if the thieves are not arrested and the stolen goods recovered soon, they would take to the streets in protest.
