JAMMU , Nov 4: Thousands of people including political and social activists, bureaucrats and others from all walks of life attended the cremation of veteran Congress leader and former Deputy Chief Minister, Pt Mangat Ram Sharma here today.
A large funeral procession of Late Sharma, keeping his mortal remains in a highly decorated vehicle commenced from his Green Belt Park, Gandhi Nagar residence at around 10.30 am this morning and then reached Shastri Nagar Cremation Ground. A large number of people from all walks of life including senior bureaucrats and political leaders were already waiting there to pay last tributes to the departed soul.
Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad along with senior Congress leaders, PCC chief G A Mir, former DyCM Tara Chand, Sham Lal Sharma, Raman Bhalla, Rigzin Jora, Mula Ram, Ravinder Sharma and others attended the funeral of Late Sharma. The PCC also organised a condolence meeting at party headquarters under the leadership of Mr Azad where all the leaders including PCC chief G A Mir, former Ministers, sitting MLAs/ MLCs and party leaders and workers present paid rich tributes to Late Sharma. Similar condolence meeting was also held at Srinagar where Peerzada Mohd Sayeed, Taj Mohiuddin, G N Monga, Farooq Andrabi and others paid tributes to Late Sharma.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi, vice president Rahul Gandhi and general secretary Ambika Soni ( incharge J&K) deeply condoled the sad demise of former DyCM, Mangat Ram Sharma and conveyed their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
“ Former Chief Minister and NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah spoke to the State Chief Secretary, asking him to request Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to give Late Sharma a State funeral,” PTI said.
The opposition NC leader batted for the State funeral of Late Sharma as he also remained Speaker Legislative Assembly.
Prominent among others who attended the cremation included Minister for Health and Medical Education Bali Bhagat, State BJP chief, Sat Sharma, BJP Member of Parliament Jugal Kishore Sharma, former Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather, NC Provincial president, Devender Singh Rana, Ajay Sadhotra, Surjit Singh Slathia, Ex-MP Madan Lal Sharma, Yogesh Sawhney, Dr Manohar Lal, Kanta Bhan, Manjit Singh, Vikram Malhotra, Naresh Gupta, Manmohan Singh, Namarata Sharma, Shah Mohd, Anil Chopra, Th Balbir Singh, Ashok Sharma, Indu Pawar, Pranav Shagotra, Kuldeep Raj, S S Shingari, IGP Jammu, DIG, SSP, DC Jammu besides many others.
Meanwhile, Minister for Works and Parliamentary Affairs Abdul Rehman Veeri has condoled the demise of former DyCM. Veeri conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family. Former Minister and senior Congress leader Gurmukh Singh, Mohd Muzaffar Parrey –MLC, CPI leader Abdul Rehman Tukroo, NCP State president, Thakur Randhir Singh and ANC leaders Begum Khalida Shah, Muzaffar Shah and Gian Singh have also condoled the demise of former DyCM.
