Thousands of students perform Suryanamaskar across Jammu

JAMMU, Feb 18: In connection with ongoing 150 birth anniversary celebrations of Swami Vivekananda thousands of students perform Suryanamaskar’, a special sequence of yoga postures, across the Jammu region today.
“Over 7,500 students in over 90 institutes in Jammu performed Suryanamaskar, a special sequence of yoga postures with 10 steps”, North-India Samiti coordinator, Gain Chand said here today.
This was organised as a part of the ongoing 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Swami Vivekananda, with a view to propagate the ideals of Swamiji among school students, he added.
Reports coming form other parts of the region said that thousands of students took part in Suriya namaskar all over Jammu region today which was organised by Swami Vivekananda Shard Sati Samaroh Samiti. The Samiti had fixed a target of 16,000 students from over 240 schools for the Suryanamaskar programme in Jammu and Kashmir, but the number crossed to over 35,000 students from 350 schools, Chand said.
The year -long programme in connection with Swami Vivekananda Ji birth anniversary is being organised by Swami Vivekananda Shard Sati Samaroh Samiti.
A nation-wide Suryanamaskar programme is being carried out as part of Vivekananda’s 150th birth anniversary celebrations with the aim to propgate ideas of Swami Ji among students and create awareness and interest among students to practice the Yogic exercise.
Mr Chand said the purpose of organizing Suriyanamsakars all over the country was to imbibe the spirit of patriotism among the children. The Suriyanamaskar is the part of Yoga which increases concentration, sharpens memory and also gives self confidence.
He said Swami Vivekanda had envisioned Indian youth to be sharp, self confident and concentrated on their goal.
He said the programme is held all over the country and there was a good response from student community as a whole. This was first ever such a large programme held in the country and we hope it will be included in Genies book of records.
Besides Ved Mandir in Jammu the Suriyanamaskar was performed at Ram Lila Ground Janipur, Colony, Eden Gardens, Shakti Nagar, K K Resorts Bohri, Jagti township, Zorawar Singh Park Trikuta Nagar, Digiana, Sainik Colony, Kendraya Vidayalaya, Chatta and other places.
This will be followed by many other programmes during the year, Mr Chand added.
During the programme lectures were given by scholars on the life of Swami Vivekananda and his achievements.
