JAMMU, Jan 11: Thousands of broadband subscribers of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) have been suffering during the past two days due to the failure of Nigam to restore damaged Optical Fiber Cable (OFC) in Janipur-Bantalab area of Jammu city.
The broadband services of the BSNL from Janipur Telephone Exchange suddenly got disrupted last evening following damage to OFC in Bantalab area causing inconvenience to the subscribers including Government and private offices.
On getting complaints from large number of subscribers, the BSNL authorities deployed its men and machinery and got the damage temporary repaired late in the night. However, the problem again started this morning when broadband services again got snapped.
The subscribers continued to make repeated calls to the BSNL officers since morning till late tonight to ascertain the reason behind disruption of broadband services but there was no satisfactory response from them. Every time they were told that BSNL engineers were on the job. They, however, did not specify any time- frame for restoration of services causing resentment among the subscribers.
“We are fed up of repeated disruption in broadband services of the BSNL”, several subscribers told EXCELSIOR on telephone, adding “an officer told us that vendor, who has been engaged for restoration of OFC, has expressed inability to immediately restore the services on the ground that his engineers were out of station”.
Some other subscribers alleged that BSNL officers were not taking restoration of services seriously despite lots of inconvenience to them. “Every time they told us that it is matter of few hours as engineers were on the job”, the subscribers said.
When contacted, General Manager, Atul Sharma said that a company laying underground cables had damaged the OFC between Janipur and Bantalab area due to which broadband services being provided from Janipur Exchange suffered badly.
“I think our engineers would be able to restore OFC by tomorrow”, he said in response to a question. He, however, could not give satisfactory reply when asked why BSNL authorities were acting as mute spectator to repeated damages to OFC in different parts of Jammu instead of getting the police action initiated in such incidents.
