Threatened waterbodies

I
Sir,
This has reference to the article ‘Threatened wetlands’ DE Feb 8.
The article mentions the names of various wetlands present in the State of Jammu and Kashmir. But there is ambiguity in the information provided regarding the wetlands in Jammu region.
There is no mention of Surinsar-Mansar wetlands in the list, although it’s a Ramsar site and site of international importance and one of the important sites in Jammu region.
There is need to provide authentic information to the readers, especially about Jammu region which is being neglected in different spheres.

Sir,
Apropos article Threatened wetlands, it may be said that people are turning very insensitive towards waterbodies, which ironically, play an important role in our lives.
There were  numerous ponds in and outskirts of the Jammu city. These water bodies  not only beautified the area, but also met water needs of people.
With rapid urbanisation and growth of  population these waterbodies vanished from the landscape of Jammu. Some of these were encroached either by landmafia or were filled to pave way for human settlement. The loss of these water bodies may certainly effect the environment and the consequences so produced will be devastating  to the planet.
Even in villages waterbodies are losing their existence with each passing day. No one seems to be bothered to preserve them for posterity.
The Government, NGOs and general masses should wake up to this reality at the earliest before it is too late.
Yours etc…
