JAMMU, Jan 18: A suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED), planted in a tiffin box, was seized in Rajouri district today even as a joint team of various Central agencies including Intelligence have been camping at Dhangri for on spot assessment of the situation where seven civilians were killed by the militants on January 1 and 2.
Police said the object was found from an open field in Rajouri town’s Kheora locality this afternoon.
The area was immediately cordoned off. Bomb Disposal Squads and sniffer dogs were pressed into service and the material was seized, it said, adding that further investigation is on. The IED was later defused.
A major tragedy has been averted with timely recovery of the IED.
Officials said security forces have launched a search operation in the town and checking has also been intensified following the seizure of the IED-like object.
Police and other security forces are on high alert in the district following two terror strikes earlier this month that left seven people dead and 14 injured.
While five people were killed in terrorist firing in Dhangri village on January 1, two children lost their lives in an IED blast the next day outside the house of one of the firing victims.
Meanwhile, high-level teams of various Central agencies including those from Intelligence wings have been camping at Dhangri in Rajouri district for on spot assessment of the situation in the wake of terror attacks and go into other aspects of the situation.
The teams have been deputed from New Delhi and will be returning in a day or two.
Investigations of the case have already been handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
However, joint teams of Army, paramilitary forces and police have launched massive search operations at different places to track down the militants involved in the killings.
Though there has been no trace of the militants, sources said police have got some clues.
Only yesterday, Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh told a press conference that police have obtained certain vital leads in Rajouri killings and success will be made shortly.
