JAMMU, Feb 27: In a crackdown on timber mafia, police has seized timber worth lakhs in Bhaderwah, district Doda.
SP Bhaderwah Roop Raj said that on the complaint made by a photojournalist, who was severally thrashed and his camera was broken by the timber mafia, when he clicked pictures of the loot of green gold in village Halyan of Bhaderwah, police conducted raid in the said village.
“Approximately 45 timber scants beside 25 felled green cedar trees worth several lakhs were seized during the raid”, SP said, adding that on seeing police party, smugglers managed to flee.
SP said that the timber extracted from the trees was illegally cut down from nearby forest in village Halyan and was being shifted and kept in village Halyan and nearby villages.
A case under Section 6 of Forest Act 379 RPC has been registered and manhunt launched to arrest the accused, he said.
