JAMMU, Mar 15: General secretary of J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) and DDC Member Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony, has voiced strong concerns regarding the much-delayed Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. He called upon the Election Commission (EC) to uphold its duty independently, without resorting to vague excuses such as security concerns.
Speaking at the public meeting held at Chatha here today, the senior Congress leader questioned the rationale behind delaying the Assembly polls in J&K while the country gears up for upcoming Parliament elections. “Why not hold the Assembly polls simultaneously with the parliamentary elections?” he asked, highlighting the resentment among the people who continue to suffer due to the absence of an elected government in J&K.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the lip service shown by the EC, Tony asserted, “The people of J&K deserve better. It’s high time the EC moves beyond mere promises and takes concrete actions to restore democracy in the region.” Furthermore, Tony pointed out the lack of serious intent from the BJP regarding the Assembly elections, attributing it to the growing resentment among the populace.
Tony emphasized the critical need for transparent and timely electoral processes, urging the EC to act swiftly and independently to address the pressing concerns of the people of J&K by announcing Assembly polls in the UT simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls in the country.
Earlier, speaking at a meeting in the Chatha area, Taranjit Singh Tony addressed a long-pending demand of 25 to 30 years from the residents of Chatha Pind. He highlighted the successful efforts to shift high-tension wires from rooftops and houses in the area, a feat achieved through collaborative endeavors with employees of the Power Development Department (PDD). The meeting was organized by Mohinder Choudhary, Sarpanch Avtar Singh and Kuldeep Singh Shanty.
