JAMMU, June 26: Taranjit Singh Tony, General Secretary of J&K Pradesh Congress Committee and DDC Suchetgarh, has strongly opposed the proposed design of the RCC Wall structure for the Expressway Flyover passing from Narwal to Sainik Colony, Jammu, seeking modification of the proposed RCC Wall structure, advocating instead for a Pier and Girder Wall structure.
In a recent statement issued today, Tony criticized the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for their decision to construct walls on both sides of the mid-section of the flyover. He emphasized that this design poses a significant threat to the local business community and the well-being of residents.
“The blind wall structure will disrupt vital connections between shops, businesses, and residences. This will cause inconvenience to residents, hinder emergency services, and impact the daily commutes of pedestrians,” he said.
Tony highlighted the crucial infrastructure present in the affected stretch between Narwal and Sainik Colony, which includes several multi-specialty hospitals, international schools, and banquet halls. He warned that the construction of the Expressway Flyover with blind walls would severely impact localities such as Kunjwani, Greater Kailash, Marble Market, Sainik Colony, Deeli, Channi Himmat, Channi Rama, Sabzi Mandi, Fruit Mandi, Transport Nagar, Bathindi, Rajiv Nagar, Kalka Colony, Narwal Bala, Sunjwan, and Trikuta Nagar Extension. Additionally, he noted the significant threat this design poses to the trader community in these areas.
The senior Congress leader referenced the detrimental impact witnessed with a similar design in the Bari Brahmana flyover, which proved harmful to local businesses and community cohesion. He urged the government to listen to the genuine concerns of the people and traders of Jammu and Kashmir, stating that they feel neglected and unheard.
“The business community is paying heavy taxes, yet the government at the Centre is not addressing their genuine issues,” Tony said.
Tony called upon Union Minister for National Highways, Nitin Gadkari to intervene and support the business community of Jammu by directing NHAI to adopt a community-friendly pillar-based design for the Expressway Flyover.
