JAMMU, Dec 18: General secretary of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) and DDC member from Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony, has called upon the Central Government to provide ownership rights of land and houses to all refugees, including those from the Partition of 1947, wars of 1965 and 1971, and Pakistan occupied Jammu & Kashmir (PoJK) refugees.
Tony made this crucial demand while interacting with media persons after inaugurating a Playway Nursery School at Sae Khurd in Suchetgarh. Sarpanch Sarbjeet Singh, Jaswant Singh and youth Kissan leader Mandeep Choudhary accompanied Tony. Notably, Tony has contributed Rs 25 lakhs from his Constituency Development Fund (CDF) towards this educational initiative.
Highlighting the plight of the refugees, Tony said that the then Government has provided land chunks to the refugees during their migration to Jammu in 1947, 1965 and 1971. “These nationalist people have been waiting for ownership rights for over 70 years. The delay in granting these rights seems to be a significant injustice.” He urged the Government to initiate the process promptly to rectify this longstanding issue.
Tony also emphasized the hardships faced by farmers along the borders, who have been cultivating the custodian land since 1947 but till date they have not provided the ownership rights. In addition to these demands, he also called for the fulfillment of the BJP Government’s commitment to providing 5-marla plots to border dwellers, emphasizing the need for immediate action to support these communities.
The senior Congress leader observed that there is gross resentment amongst the people residing in the border areas of Jammu region. He asked the Government at the Centre to fulfill its commitment made with the people failing which the people will give suitable reply to the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in 2024.
