CRPF officer succumbs; deserter SPO, TRF militant arrested

Srinagar, Dec 29 : A top militant commander were among 2-3 militants trapped in Lawveypora area of Srinagar while a Central Reserve Police Officer who was injured in a grenade attack last week succumbed today while a TRF militant and deserted Special Police Officer (SPO) were arrested.
The gun battle raged at Lawaypora area of Srinagar outskirts this evening after security forces cordoned the area. Police and 2 RR of Army and CRPF cordoned off the area after a specific input about the presence of militants in Lawaypora.

After security forces zeroed in on the suspected spot, militants fired at the security forces triggering a gunfight. The firing between the two sides is going on intermittently while as cordon layers have been tightened around the area to prevent militants from fleeing.
Inspector General of Police Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, told Excelsior that 2-3 militants are trapped in a house in Lawveypora. He said that operation has been suspended and will be resumed in the morning.
Firing was going on intermittently tonight but it stopped after the operation was put on hold. The cordon has been tightened and all entry and exit points have been sealed with reinforcements rushed to area to prevent militants from fleeing. Lights have been installed and security forces are keeping a tight vigil.
As the encounter, started the traffic on Srinagar-Baramulla highway was diverted. The traffic from and to Srinagar and from Baramulla, Sopore andGulmarg was diverted via Narbal-Budgam.
And Assistant Sub Inspector of paramilitary CRPF succumbed today, six days after he was injured in a grenade blast in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
The ASI Nitra Pal Singh succumbed to the injuries at SKIMS Soura today. Earlier on December 24, a CRPF Constable Mritun Joy who was also injured in grenade attack at Ganderbal succumbed.
They were seriously injured in the grenade blast at Tawheed Chowk Ganderbal on December 23. Besides them two other paramilitary personnel, a policemen and an RDD official were injured in the blast.
And Police today arrested the militant associate of outfit The Resistance Front in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
The IGP said that based on specific input that there will be some movement of militants/OGWs on Baramulla-Handwara highway, a joint naka comprising of Police Baramulla & SF was established near Jehlum Stadium within the  jurisdiction of Police station  Baramulla.
“At about 1800 hours, a Maruti Alto car bearing No JK05G 1675 was moving from Baramulla towards Handwara. On seeing the Naka, the driver tried to flee. This action seemed suspicious to the naka personnel. The naka personnel boldly cordoned and stopped the car. On spot frisking and physical search, cash of Rs 13000 was recovered from the person. On searching the car, three grenades were recovered which were hidden in a bag full of charcoal”, Police said.
“During on spot questioning he revealed his name as Asif Gull son of Ghulam Mohammad Alwaie. He also revealed that he was working as OGW for TRF”, Police said.
He also revealed that he was in contact with one local militant Abid presently at PoK. “He was also in contact of Hyder alias Jajja, Usman (FT)  and Inayatullah and also arranged logistic for them”, Police said.
And a week after going missing in Kulgam, a Special Police Officer (SPO) was arrested today along with an AK-47 rifle in south Kashmir district.
The SPO Zakir Ahmad Malik (No. 967/K) son of Mohammad Sikinder Malik  of Hangir was arrested along with one rifle, one magazine and 24 rounds.
He had deserted along with an AK weapon, one magazine and 30 rounds from Police Station Frisal on 22nd December.
