JAMMU, Oct 23: The annual Deepawali Utsav was inaugurated at Apsara Road Jammu today.
Organised by the Directorate of Tourism, Jammu, in collaboration with the District Administration, J&K Academy of Art, Culture & Languages, and the Apsara Road Traders Association, the vibrant celebration, which beautifully melds Jammu’s cultural heritage with the spirit of Diwali, will run until November 1, 2024.
The festivities feature cultural performances, art and craft stalls displaying exquisite handicrafts, and an open mic event for local talents.
A grand cultural performance is also scheduled for October 26, 2024, with an open mic on October 28, creating a dynamic platform for artistic expression.
Jugal Kishore Sharma, Member of Parliament (MP), expressed his enthusiasm for the event’s potential to unite the community and promote tourism.
He stated, “The Deepawali Utsav beautifully showcases our vibrant culture and the ongoing transformation of our market. The cleanliness achieved through the Swachh Bharat Mission enhances the festive atmosphere. As Jammu progresses, we must sustain this positive trajectory.”
Vivekananda Rai, Director Tourism, Jammu, emphasized the festival’s crucial role in promoting tourism: “The Deepawali Utsav is essential for positioning Jammu as a vibrant tourist destination.”
“We remain committed to supporting local markets through engaging activities that encourage visitors and bolster businesses. Events like this are vital for establishing Jammu’s cultural identity.”
Sunaina Sharma Mehta, Joint Director Tourism, highlighted the festival’s impact on heritage preservation: “The Deepawali Utsav celebrates Jammu’s cultural tapestry. By showcasing local artisans and performers, we foster a deeper appreciation for our heritage while boosting tourism. Such events enhance the economic vitality of the market and help preserve our traditions.”
She invited visitors to embrace Jammu’s craftsmanship, encouraging the purchase of handmade gifts that uplift local artisans.
