Tourism today has become one of the largest and fastest growing industries of the world. India is one of the world’s most exciting and attractive tourist resorts. India is famous for her scenic beauty. Nature has been kind to her. India’s architecture, sculpture and great monuments are the finest creations known to the civilised man. India earns a lot of foreign exchange. Jammu and Kashmir has a great potential for the development of tourism. It is full of beauty spots both in Jammu and in Kashmir. Jammu is an ancient City. It is known as the city of Temples. The most famous temple is the Raghunath Temple situated in the heart of the city. Vaishno Devi Temple attracts lakhs of pilgrims and tourists from all corners of India. Kud and Batote are ideal health resorts. They are famous for their charming scenery and salubrious (health giving) climate. Sanasar with its lovely meadows, springs, small water falls and lakes has a charm all of its own. Kishtwar is endowed with scenic beauty. Bhadarwah, the small Kashmir can be compared to Switzerland in its beauty of hills and valleys. Basohli Palace ruins speak of the skill and mastery of the architects and painters.
Kashmir is the paradise of tourists. Its scenic beauty and salubrious climate have given it the title of “Tourists Paradise”. Kashmir is one of the most attractive tourist resorts in the world. There are many beauty spots of Kashmir that attract tourists from far flung places. Pahalgam and Gulmarg are among the finest of them all. The place is ideal for skiing and trekking. Martand is a temple of the Sun god. It is very ancient and built out of curved stones. It is a place worth seeing.
The Jammu and Kashmir Government Tourism Department extend all kinds of facilities to tourists. Tourist trade is an important factor in the economy of Jammu and Kashmir. Some Europeans come in winter to enjoy the beauty of snowfall and such winter sports as skating and skiing at Gulmarg which is the queen of hill stations in Asia.
A Tourist Reception Centre has been set up for looking after the overall needs of the tourists. Visitors can travel to Jammu and Kashmir by road or by air. The train goes upto Jammu. Tourist traffic is increasing every year and adding to the revenue of the State. It has become a good source of income.
