Towards self-sufficiency

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is optimistic that in a few years from now the State will be able to achieve self-sufficiency in power production as generating 9000 MWs of power is in the offing. Under serious efforts of the Government there appear policy re-adjustment and emphasis is gradually shifting to small power projects, which are realizable within short period of time and also feasible from many other aspects. The small projects would also provide employment opportunities to the local skilled and unskilled workers. It is not only 7.5 Branwar SHP in Budgam that infuses element of self-sufficiency in the context of power generation, there are other schemes also that have been taken in hand by the Government and more schemes could also emerge with the passage of time. Power is crucial to the development of the State and as the trend of generating power through smaller power projects over nullahs and streams gains momentum, we will be able to overcome the long standing problem of power shortage. Cooperation of local people in these efforts would go a along way in realizing the objective.
Our electricity purchase bill is enormous at present. Besides, there are enormous losses in transmission and pilferage. The remedy to power pilferage was found in installing meters but full metering has not taken place and unless that is done power theft may not stop. The PDD has to run along two basic principles viz. to generate more power and to curb waste or misuse of power. We are eager to share the optimism of the Chief Minister and the people in general are eagerly waiting for the day when their power woes will fade away once for all and that electricity will flow without interruption.
