DHAKA, Sep 4 : The trade between India and Bangladesh resumed via railway through the Benapole land port on Wednesday, after being suspended for 47 days, media reports said.
The trade resumed following discussions between high-level officials from both countries, Benapole Land Port Deputy Director Rezaul Karim said, as quoted in a UNB news agency report carried by Dhaka Tribune.
In July, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and public protests, the Indian government took several measures citing security concerns.
Among these measures was the suspension of cargo transportation and passenger travel by railway between the two countries from July 19, according to the media reports.
However, after the fall of the Awami League government on August 5 following a public uprising, an interim government was established, and the situation normalised.
On August 12, the rail authorities of Bangladesh sent a letter to their Indian counterparts calling for resuming trade and passenger services.
President of the Benapole Import-Export Association Mohsin Milon said traders were relieved following the resumption of trade via railway through the land port. (UNI )
