Traders stage sit-in protest against arrest of shopkeepers

BARAMULLA, Sept 23:
Traders in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district today staged a peaceful sit-in protest against the arrest of some of the shopkeepers in the district.
Bewopar Mandal, Baramulla had called for a shut down in the town against these arrests, however, soon after the meeting with traders and police officials, all the arrested youth were released as a goodwill gesture.
Deputy Inspector General Baramulla, JP Singh told  that some shopkeepers involved in stone-pelting were released after the traders body signed the bond and assured the police that these people will not indulge in stone pelting activities in future.
Reports said that police had picked up few shopkeepers namely Tawseef Ahmed, Farooq Ahmed, Sajad Ahmed, Nazir Ahmed and Mehraj-u-Din, for their alleged role in stone-pelting.
Traders staged a sit-in against these arrests while scores of youth resorted to stone-pelting at Khanpora and Cement Bridge who were dispersed by police by using tear smoke shelling.
DIG, North Kashmir, said that after their meeting with traders body, arrested youth were released on the assurance of the latter that these youth would not indulge in stone-pelting incidents in future.
The strike was called off after the release of the youth. (AGENCIES)
